A military unit formed in the fictional world of Year Zero. The unit seems to have formed after the bio-terrorism attack in Los Angeles that is described in the Hollywood in Memoriam website. Members of the unit seem to all share a deep belief in Christianity, and use their faith as motivation in the war.

A telephone number from the Year Zero promotion. When the number is called, it plays back an audio recording of case number 71839j from U.S. Wiretap website. The recording is of a female who gets trapped in a nightclub when a person infected with Red Horse comes in.

A telephone number from the Year Zero promotion. Upon calling the number, a recording is played of a newsreader, a man making comments on the events explained by the newsreader, and a clip of "Survivalism."

1 (866) 445-6580

A telephone number from the Year Zero promotion. This phone number is found on a sticker on the back of the Year Zero album. The number leads to a recording from the US Bureau of Morality telling the caller that by purchasing the album, they have been flagged as Anti-American.

A Million Miles Away

A fan-compiled bootleg of one recording of every song that NIN had played live during the 2008 Lights In The Sky Over North/South America tour. The bootleg consists of what was felt was the "best" performace of each track mixed together to sound like one concert.

A Mix Of All That Was

A fan-compled bootleg of one recording of every song that NIN had played live from 1989 to 2000. The bootleg consists of what was felt was the "best" performace of the song and spans across four discs.

A Perfect Circle

Band formed by Billy Howerdel, a guitar tech that worked for NIN, and featuring Maynard James Keenan from Tool. They opened for NIN during Fragility v2.0 in 2000. See A Perfect Circle on Wikipedia for more information.

A Violet Fluid

A short instrumental piece featured on March Of The Pigs as well as disc 2 of the deluxe reissue of The Downward Spiral. Mislabeled on some copies as "A Violent Fluid".

Almond, Mark

Half of the duo known as Soft Cell. He is (co-)credited on Closer To God and The Downward Spiral Deluxe Edition for the track, "Memorabilia." You can read more about Marc Almond on Wikipedia.

Amos, Tori

A fellow musician who has worked with Trent Reznor. Trent contributed vocals on her single "Past The Mission" from the album Under The Pink. His vocals for the song were unusually and somewhat unrecognizably soft and pleasant.

An Omen

The second EP recorded by How To Destroy Angels.

And All That Could Have Been

• Release: A CD/DVD/VHS album of NIN's live performances during the Fragility 2.0 tour.
• Song: The seventh track on Still. There are currently no other versions of this track.

Angry Sniper

A fictional character from the world of Year Zero. A predominant character, he's featured in the BallgameOver.mp3 as well as on the Consolidated Mail Systems website. He also appears to be the one running the Be the Hammer site.

Annie

Believed to be Andrea Mulrain. She was "a college sweetheart/ heartbreak situation" of Trent Reznor's. Her name appears in "The Becoming" and is the only name of a person to ever appear in a NIN song.

Another Version of the Truth

• Song: The fourteenth track off of Year Zero. A remix by the Kronos Quartet and Enrique Gonzalez Müller is featured on Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D.
• Website: Fictional website created for the story of Year Zero. On first glance, the website appears to be nothing more than a large graphic, with a simple, patriotic, (if somewhat propagandistic) American message, and it is labeled at the bottom as coming from the US Bureau of Morality. Upon more digging, a message board is revealed in which citizens are discussing many things about society, mostly involving resistance to the oppressive authority in place.

Aphex Twin

The stage name of Richard David James. He is an artist who has contributed on many remixes for NIN. And, with the track "At The Heart Of It All," he is the only artist to have an original song appear on a NIN album. Outside his contributions to NIN, he is best known for his unique music style and his top 100 track, "Come to Daddy." You can read more about this artist on Wikipedia under Aphex Twin.

Appendage

A short piece of music that was tacked onto the end of "Please" on the cassette edition of The Fragile.

Art Is Resistance

Website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. Like the name, the site suggests resistance via artistic means, rather than violence.

The Art of Self Destruction, Part One

The second track off of Further Down The Spiral. This track is a remix of "Mr. Self Destruct."

At The Heart Of It All

The seventh track on both versions of Further Down The Spiral. This track was created (and performed) by Aphex Twin, and is currently the only track to ever appear on a NIN release that is not at least partially performed by NIN. A shorter version appears on the Aphex Twin release 26 Mixes for Cash.

Avery, Eric

Former Jane's Addiction bass player who was announced to be a part of the NIN live band in early 2013. Several months later, he left the band and was replaced by Josh Eustis.

B

Bauhaus

A rock band whom opened for Nine Inch Nails during their Summer Amphitheatre Tour. Lead Singer Peter Murphy collaborated with Trent Reznor for several special radio appearances. See the Wikipedia entry of Bauhaus for more details.

Be The Hammer

Website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. The site seems to be created by a former soldier, and suggests violence as means of resistance against the government.

Becoming, The

The seventh track off of The Downward Spiral. A version of this track can be found on Still.

Beginning of The End, The

The second track off of Year Zero. A remix by Ladytron appears on Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D.

Belew, Adrian

Guitarist who has appeared on a few NIN releases and was enlisted to play guitar on the 2013 and 2014 tours.

Beside You In Time

• Release: Also known as Halo 22. It is a DVD/HD DVD/Blu-Ray documenting the Live: With Teeth tour.
• Song: The twelfth track off the album With Teeth. A version of this track also appears on Beside You In Time.

Beauty Of Being Numb, The

The tenth track off of Further Down The Spiral. It is a mostly instrumental track that is somewhat of a remix of "Mr. Self Destruct".

Big Come Down, The

The ninth track off of the right disc of The Fragile. A version of this track appears on Beside You In Time.

Big Man With A Gun

The ninth track off the album The Downward Spiral. There are currently no other versions of this track.

Blue pills

A type of medication given to soldiers in the fictional world of Year Zero. These pills are said to help re-introduce the aggression that is killed by Parepin. Unlike Red pills, which are given only to "special" soldiers, these pills are given to all soldiers.

Bowie, David

A famous musician who Trent Reznor was not only influenced by, but has worked with on many occasions.

Brian Tsunoda

Website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. The website seems to be an early research paper abstract about the The Presence. The paper appears to have three authors, one who's name is Brian Tsunoda.

Broken

A Nine Inch Nails EP. Also known as Halo 5.

Broken Movie

A long-form music video made to promote the Broken EP, released in 1992.

Burn

• Release: A promotional release containing "Burn".
• Song: A track from Nine Inch Nails on the Natural Born Killers Soundtrack. The track was later released on disc 2 of the deluxe reissue of The Downward Spiral. A version of this track may be found on Beside You In Time.

Abbreviation for Beside You In Time.

Closer

Closure

Also known as Halo 12. Closure has been released officially as two VHS tapes with NIN tour footage from the Self-Destruct Tour and NIN music videos. An "unoffical" DVD version was "leaked" via BitTorrent in late December of 2006.

Clouser, Charlie

A former NIN band member whose activites included playing drums and keyboard, engineering, mixing, and music programming.

Collector, The

The third track from With Teeth. A version of this song appears in the bonus features of Beside You In Time.

Complication

The seventh track off of the right disk of The Fragile.

Consolidated Mail Systems

Website created for the fictional world of Year Zero.

Copper

In the fictional world of Year Zero, Copper is used in the vaccine to prevent infection by the Red Horse virus.

Corona Radiata

The eighth track on The Slip. No other versions of this song appear on any halos.

Cortini, Alessandro

A musician who was recruited to play with the NIN and HTDA live bands. Member of the band modwheelmood.

CRC Sessions

A live in-studio performance at the Chicago Recording Company during Fragility v2.0, which inspired the stripped-down versions of NIN songs that would appear on Still.

Day The World Went Away, The

• Release: Also known as Halo 13.
• Song: The second track on left disc of The Fragile. Versions of this track also appear on The Day The World Went Away and Still.

Dead Souls

A Joy Division cover recorded for The Crow Soundtrack. It was later added as the fifth track on Disk 2 of the deluxe reissue of The Downward Spiral.

Deep

The second track off of the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider Soundtrack performed by NIN. This track currently does not appear on any Halos.

Demon Seed

The tenth track on The Slip. No other versions of this song appear on any halos.

Dillon, Jerome

A former drummer for NIN. He left the band in 2005 due to "health issues".

Discipline

The fourth track on The Slip. A version of this song appears on the bonus DVD of the physical edition of The Slip.

Dissonance

The name given to NIN's set when playing during the Outside Tour with David Bowie in 1995.

Down In It

• Release: Also known as Halo 1
• Song: The third track off of Pretty Hate Machine. Versions of this track also appear on Down In It, Head Like A Hole, Closure and Purest Feeling.

Downward Spiral, The

• Release: Also known as Halo 8. This is the third studio album released by NIN.
• Song: The thirteenth track on the album The Downward Spiral. A remix of this song appears on Further Down The Spiral as well as disc 2 of the deluxe reissue of The Downward Spiral.

EL-P

Also known as El-Producto. An artist whose remix of the Nine Inch Nails song Only appeared on the Every Day Is Exactly The Same single. El-P and Trent Reznor also collaborated on a song entitled "Flyentology", which can be found on El-P's March 2007 release, I'll Sleep When You're Dead.

ETS

Short for Echoing The Sound.

Echoing The Sound

A predominant fan-run internet forum for discussions about Nothing Records artists, most prominently Nine Inch Nails. The site name is taken from the lyrics from the NIN song, "Please".

Echoplex

The fifth track on The Slip. A version of this song appears on the bonus DVD of the physical edition of The Slip.

Elliot R Carraig

A character from the fictional world of Year Zero. Elliot is first mentioned on the Exterminal website as a member of a resistance group called, The Spiders.

Erased, Over, Out

The eleventh track off of Further Down The Spiral. This track is a remix of the song, "Eraser".

Eraser

The eleventh track off of The Downward Spiral. Versions of this track can also be found on Further Down The Spiral, Closure and Beside You In Time.

Even Deeper

The eighth track from the Left Disk of The Fragile. Currently, no other versions of this track appear on any other Halos.

Every Day Is Exactly The Same

• Release - Also known as Halo 21.
• Song - The sixth track off of With Teeth. Versions of this track can also be found on Every Day Is Exactly The Same.

Exhibit 24

A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. The website is dossier of evidence against a classified individual, who is speculated to be Trent Reznor. In addition, the site lists usernames of members from both The Spiral and Echoing The Sound as a part of The Resistance Network.

Exterminal

A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. It is a database of the inmates in Extrajudiciary Federal Detainment Camp in Guam. Included are many references to the actions various individuals and groups, providing a broader understanding of how people are fighting for their freedoms in Year Zero.

Eustis, Josh

Member of Telefon Tel Aviv who was enlisted to play bass on the NIN 2013 and 2014 tours.

Filter

A band formed by former NIN guitarist, Richard Patrick. You can read more about this band on their Wikipedia entry.

Finck, Robin

A guitarist for NIN. He left the band to become a member of Guns N' Roses, but re-joined in 2008.

Fist Fuck

The fifth track on the Fixed EP. This track is a remix of the song, "Wish".

Fixed

Also known as Halo 6. This EP is comprised of remixes of the songs from the Broken EP.

Flood

Producer who worked on every major Nine Inch Nails release from 1989 to 1994.

Four Of Us Are Dying, The

The ninth track on The Slip. No other versions of this song appear on any halos.

Fownes, Rich

A musician that was announced to be a part of the NIN live band in early 2008. Several months later, he reportedly left the band and was replaced with Justin Meldal-Johnsen.

Fragile, The

• Release: Also known as Halo 14. This is the fourth studio album released by NIN.
• Song: The sixth track on the album The Fragile. Versions of this song were released on Still and nin.com.

Fragility

The name given to the tour in 1999-2000 that was in support of the album The Fragile. The first leg was called Fragility v1.0 and took place in Europe, Japan and Australia. The second leg was called Fragility v2.0 and took place in North America and European festivals. From the Fragility v2.0 leg of the tours, the CD/DVD/VHS, And All That Could Have Been was made.

Frail, The

The third track from the left disc of The Fragile. Versions of this song appear on Things Falling Apart as well as And All That Could Have Been.

Free Rebel Art

A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. The website is akin to the Art Is Resistance website in that it preaches non-violent resistance. However, further research of the website reveals more.

Freese, Josh

A drummer for NIN. He is a session musician with a prolific career.

Further Down The Spiral

Also known as Halo 10. This album contains mostly remixes of the tracks from The Downward Spiral.

Gave Up

The sixth track off of Broken. Versions of this track also appear on Fixed, And All That Could Have Been and Beside You In Time.

Get Down, Make Love

The third track off of Sin. This track is a cover of the Queen song from the album News of The World. It also appears as a bonus track on the remastered edition of Pretty Hate Machine.

Getting Smaller

The ninth track off of With Teeth. This track features Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters (and formerly Nirvana). Currently, the only version of this track is featured on With Teeth.

Ghosts I–IV

The seventh studio album by NIN, also known as Halo 26. It is a four-volume album which consists of 36 instrumental tracks.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Soundtrack

The soundtrack for the David Fincher film, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The soundtrack was scored by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

God Given

The tenth track off of Year Zero. A remix of it can be found on Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D.

Gone, Still

The fifth track off of Still. This track is an instrumental. Currently, the only version of this track is on Still.

Good Soldier, The

A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. The website features the journal of the fictional character, Jeremiah Snow.

Great Below, The

Great Collapse, The

The second track on Things Falling Apart. This is said to be an outtake from The Fragile and it contains lyrical elements from "The Wretched".

Great Destroyer, The

The thirteenth track from Year Zero. A version of this song appears on Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D.

Greater Good, The

The twelfth track from Year Zero. An instrumental version of this song appears on Survivalism.

Grohl, Dave

Former drummer of Nirvana and creater and current front man of Foo Fighters. He contributed as a drummer on some of the tracks on the With Teeth album.

Gunshots By Computer

The first track from Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D. This track is a remix of the song, "Hyperpower!".

Halo

This is the official numbering system of NIN releases. While there is plenty of speculation, there is no official statement of why the word 'halo' is used for this purpose.

Hand That Feeds, The

• Release: Also known as Halo 18.
• Song: The fourth track off of With Teeth. Versions of this track appear on The Hand That Feeds, Every Day Is Exactly The Same and Beside You In Time.

Happiness In Slavery

• Release: A promotional release containing "Happiness In Slavery".

Haymes, David

Keyboard player for NIN during some of the 1990 tour dates.

Head Down

The sixth track on The Slip. A version of this song appears on the bonus DVD of the physical edition of The Slip.

• Release: Also known as Halo 3.

A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. The website is a memorial for the victims of what appears to be a terrorist attack on the 81st Annual Academy Awards.

John Ferminger

A fictional character from the world of Year Zero. Mentioned in the website The Water Turned To Blood, John later took on the name of "John of Boston" after being in a traffic accident when water turned to blood under the bridge he was traveling on.

Judson Ogram Correctional Facility

A correctional facility from the fictional world of Year Zero. This place is mentioned in from the website The Water Turned To Blood and is where "John of Boston" is being kept.

Just Like You Imagined

The seventh track off of the left disk of The Fragile. Versions of this track can be found on And All That Could Have Been. It was featured in the trailer for the film "300".

Kinda I Want To

The sixth track off of Pretty Hate Machine. Versions of this track also appear on Purest Feeling.

KROQ

A radio station located in Los Angeles. This radio station is known for airing new NIN music and for hosting a December 2005 acoustic performance by NIN. More information can be found on the KROQ Wikipedia entry.

Kroupa, Darren

A NIN fan who died on April 1, 2007. It is understood that Darren met Trent Reznor via The Francis Foundation. He was allowed to visit with NIN during the production of the Year Zero album, where this photo was taken. Darren was eventually incorporated into the fictional Year Zero world on the website Secure Broadcast Informatics.

La Mer

The eleventh track from the left disc of The Fragile. Versions of this track were released on the DVD/VHS of And All That Could Have Been and nin.com.

Last

The third track on Broken. Versions of this track also appear on Fixed.

Leaving Hope

The ninth track on Still. No other versions of this track appear. Also the name of Trent Reznor's former music publishing company.

Letting You

Life You Didn't Lead, The

The name given to the NIN tour following the release of the album With Teeth. The tour started in March of 2005 and ended in October of 2006.

Lohner, Danny

Former NIN member whom has played bass, guitar, and synthesizer. Danny has also played for A Perfect Circle, Tapeworm, Killing Joke, Methods of Mayhem, Skrew, and Angkor Wat. Due to Trent Reznor's relationship with Marilyn Manson, Danny had also played acoustic guitar on the track "The Reflecting God" from the Antichrist Superstar album.

Lost Fragile Tracks

The label of a CD in a picture on nin.com, speculated to contain unreleased tracks from The Fragile recordings.

Lost Highway Soundtrack

The soundtrack for the David Lynch film, Lost Highway. The soundtrack was produced by Trent Reznor and features some tracks by him, as well as the NIN track, "The Perfect Drug".

Love Is Not Enough

The fifth track off of With Teeth. Versions of this track can be found on Only and Beside You In Time.

The Mailstrom

A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. The Mailstrom is a server-hopping program designed to catch emails as they are transmitted to the Consolidated Mail Systems, a government controlled central e-mail server for all e-mail content on the Internet. This helps provide insight into the lives of people living in world of Year Zero.

Malm, John A., Jr.

Trent Reznor's former manager and co-founder of Nothing Records. He was involved in a legal clash with Reznor in 2005, which ended with him paying Reznor $2.95 million.

March Of The Pigs

• Release: Also known as Halo 7. This was released as a teaser single prior to the album The Downward Spiral.
• Song: The fourth track from the album The Downward Spiral. Versions of this track appear on March of The Pigs, Closure, And All That Could Have Been and Beside You In Time.

March Of The Fuckheads

The seventh track off of Closer To God. No other versions of this song appear on any halos.

Marilyn Manson

Both the stage name of Brian Warner and the band he leads. Trent Reznor has worked with both the man and the band since their signing with Nothing Records in 1993.

Mark Has Been Made, The

The fourth track from the right disc of The Fragile, it is an instrumental and plays for 5:15, leading into "Please" or "10 Miles High", depending on if one is listening to the CD/Cassette or Vinyl release respectively.

Mars, Lee

Keyboard player for NIN during some of the 1990 and 1991 tour dates.

Maybe Just Once

Opalescent Haze

A website that appeared a few days prior to the release of Year Zero. The site was originally thought to be one of the Year Zero websites, but was quickly revealed to be a fake.

Open Source Resistance

A website created as part of the Year Zero experience, but not set in the fiction world of Year Zero. The website encourages people to submit works that will help awareness of the issues which could lead to a world like that in Year Zero.

Operation Chip Sweep

A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. The website seems to be a part of some kind of news organization, and talks about the Nerochip in Great Briton.

Operation Swamp 0000

A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. This site appears to have been constructed by one of the "chip-pullers" mentioned on Operation Chip Sweep. It contains detailed instructions, complete with photographs, on safe removal of a nerochip from one's own body.

Short for Open Source Resistance.

A drug from the fictional world of Year Zero. This drug is put into the water supply in the United States to help combat biological terrorism. Although, opponents of the drug claim that its use is to change serotonin and dopamine levels to keep the population sedated and easy to manipulate.

Patrick, Richard

A former guitarist for NIN, and founder of the band Filter. Recently, he has been linked to the band, Army of Anyone as the lead singer.

Peaches

The stage name for Merrill Beth Nisker. She is the front of the band Peaches and (the) Herm, whom opened for NIN during the second half of their summer 2006 U.S. tour.

Perfect Drug, The

• Release: Also known as Halo 11. This is a single released from the Lost Highway Soundtrack. It features a variety of remixes and the original track on the non-US release.
• Song: A song recorded by Nine Inch Nails for the film Lost Highway. It is renowned for its near-impossible drum solo.

Red Horse Vector

A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. This website talks about the Red Horse virus, an Ebola like virus which is less likely to fail due to climate conditions. There's information on symptoms, development, and also the development of a vaccine. It's also revealed through a video that this was the virus used to kill Jed Mather, the American diplomat, in Algeria.

Red pills

The nickname given to a type of drug in the fictional world of Year Zero. The pills are suppose to be given to soldiers to to reintroduce the aggression killed by Parepin.
