A Million Miles Away

A fan-compiled bootleg of one recording of every song that NIN had played live during the 2008 Lights In The Sky Over North/South America tour. The bootleg consists of what was felt was the "best" performance of each track mixed together to sound like one concert.

A Mix Of All That Was

A fan-compled bootleg of one recording of every song that NIN had played live from 1989 to 2000. The bootleg consists of what was felt was the "best" performance of the song and spans across four discs.

A Perfect Circle

Band formed by Billy Howerdel, a guitar tech that worked for NIN, and featuring Maynard James Keenan from Tool. They opened for NIN during Fragility v2.0 in 2000. See A Perfect Circle on Wikipedia for more information.

A Violet Fluid

A short instrumental piece featured on March Of The Pigs as well as disc 2 of the deluxe reissue of The Downward Spiral. Mislabeled on some copies as "A Violent Fluid".

Amos, Tori

A fellow musician who has worked with Trent Reznor. Trent contributed vocals on her single "Past The Mission" from the album Under The Pink. His vocals for the song were unusually and somewhat unrecognizably soft and pleasant.

And All That Could Have Been

Annie

Believed to be Andrea Mulrain. She was "a college sweetheart/ heartbreak situation" of Trent Reznor's. Her name appears in "The Becoming" and is the only name of a person to ever appear in a NIN song.

Another Version of the Truth

  • Song: The fourteenth track off of Year Zero. A remix by the Kronos Quartet and Enrique Gonzalez Müller is featured on Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D.
  • Website: Fictional website created for the story of Year Zero. On first glance, the website appears to be nothing more than a large graphic, with a simple, patriotic, (if somewhat propagandistic) American message, and it is labeled at the bottom as coming from the US Bureau of Morality. Upon more digging, a message board is revealed in which citizens are discussing many things about society, mostly involving resistance to the oppressive authority in place.

Aphex Twin

The stage name of Richard David James. He is an artist who has contributed on remixes for NIN. And, with the track "At The Heart Of It All," he is the only artist to have an original song appear on a NIN album. Outside his contributions to NIN, he is best known for his unique music style and his top 100 track, "Come to Daddy." You can read more about this artist on Wikipedia under Aphex Twin.

Appendage

A short piece of music that was tacked onto the end of "Please" on the cassette edition of The Fragile.

Art Is Resistance

Website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. Like the name, the site suggests resistance via artistic means, rather than violence.

The Art of Self Destruction, Part One

The second track off of Further Down The Spiral. This track is a remix of "Mr. Self Destruct."

ATLITW

Abbreviation for "All The Love In The World".

At The Heart Of It All

The seventh track on both versions of Further Down The Spiral. This track was created (and performed) by Aphex Twin, and is currently the only track to ever appear on a NIN release that is not at least partially performed by NIN. A shorter version appears on the Aphex Twin release 26 Mixes for Cash.

Avery, Eric

Former Jane's Addiction bass player who was announced to be a part of the NIN live band in early 2013. He left the band during rehearsals and was replaced by Josh Eustis and later Pino Palladino.

Abbreviation for Another Version Of The Truth.

Bauhaus

A rock band whom co-headlined with Nine Inch Nails during their Summer Amphitheatre Tour. Lead Singer Peter Murphy collaborated with Trent Reznor for several special radio appearances. See the Wikipedia entry of Bauhaus for more details.

Beats Music

Streaming audio service for which Trent Reznor serves as Chief Creative Officer. Also home to the Live 2013 EP and the Remix 2014 EP.

Becoming, The

Belew, Adrian

Guitarist who has appeared on several NIN releases. He was also announced to be a part of the NIN live band in early 2013, but was replaced by Robin Finck before the tour started.

Beauty Of Being Numb, The

The tenth track off of Further Down The Spiral. It is a mostly instrumental track that is somewhat of a remix of "Mr. Self Destruct".

Big Come Down, The

The ninth track off of the right disc of The Fragile. A version of this track appears on Beside You In Time.

Closure

Also known as Halo 12. Closure has been released officially as two VHS tapes with NIN tour footage from the Self-Destruct Tour and NIN music videos. An "unoffical" DVD version was "leaked" via BitTorrent in late December of 2006.

Clouser, Charlie

A former NIN band member whose activites included playing drums and keyboard, engineering, mixing, and music programming.

Coil

Electronic music act who remixed many NIN tracks. Coil member Peter Christopherson also directed several music videos and How To Destroy Angels was named after Coil's first single.

Collector, The

The third track from With Teeth. A version of this song appears in the bonus features of Beside You In Time.

Columbia Records

The label that How To Destroy Angels signed with in 2012 and Nine Inch Nails signed with in 2013.

Dead Souls

A Joy Division cover recorded for The Crow Soundtrack. It was later added as the fifth track on Disk 2 of the deluxe reissue of The Downward Spiral.

Deep

The second track off of the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider Soundtrack performed by NIN. This track currently does not appear on any Halos.

Demon Seed

The tenth track on The Slip. No other versions of this song appear on any halos.

Dillon, Jerome

A former drummer for NIN. He left the band in 2005 due to "health issues".

A predominant fan-run internet forum for discussions about Nothing Records artists, most prominently Nine Inch Nails. The site name is taken from the lyrics from the NIN song, "Please".

A musician that was announced to be a part of the NIN live band in early 2008. Several months later, he reportedly left the band and was replaced with Justin Meldal-Johnsen before the tour started.

Fragile, The

Fragility

The name given to the tour in 1999-2000 that was in support of the album The Fragile. The first leg was called Fragility v1.0 and took place in Europe, Japan and Australia. The second leg was called Fragility v2.0 and took place in North America and European festivals. From the Fragility v2.0 leg of the tours, the CD/DVD/VHS, And All That Could Have Been was made.

Frail, The

The third track from the left disc of The Fragile. Versions of this song appear on Things Falling Apart as well as And All That Could Have Been.

Freese, Josh

A drummer for NIN. He is a session musician with a prolific career.

This is the official numbering system of NIN releases. While there is plenty of speculation, there is no official statement of why the word 'halo' is used for this purpose.

A NIN fan who died on April 1, 2007. It is understood that Darren met Trent Reznor via The Francis Foundation. He was allowed to visit with NIN during the production of the Year Zero album, where this photo was taken. Darren was eventually incorporated into the fictional Year Zero world on the website Secure Broadcast Informatics.

The name given to the NIN tour following the release of the album With Teeth. The tour started in March of 2005 and ended in October of 2006. Included the Fall Arena Tour, the Spring Arena Tour and the Summer Amphitheater Tour, among others.

Lohner, Danny

Former NIN member who has played bass, guitar, and synthesizer. Danny has also played for A Perfect Circle, Tapeworm, Killing Joke, Methods of Mayhem, Skrew, and Angkor Wat. Due to Trent Reznor's relationship with Marilyn Manson, Danny had also played acoustic guitar on the track "The Reflecting God" from the Antichrist Superstar album.

Lost Fragile Tracks

The label of a CD in a picture on nin.com, speculated to contain unreleased tracks from The Fragile recordings.

Lost Highway Soundtrack

The soundtrack for the David Lynch film, Lost Highway. The soundtrack was produced by Trent Reznor and features some tracks by him, as well as the NIN track, "The Perfect Drug".

Trent Reznor's former manager and co-founder of Nothing Records. He was involved in a legal clash with Reznor in 2005, which ended with him paying Reznor $2.95 million.

Marilyn Manson

Both the stage name of Brian Warner and the band he leads. Trent Reznor has worked with both the man and the band since their signing with Nothing Records in 1993.

Mark Has Been Made, The

The fourth track from the right disc of The Fragile, it is an instrumental and plays for 5:15, leading into "Please" or "10 Miles High", depending on if one is listening to the CD/Cassette or Vinyl release respectively.

My Violent Heart

The eighth track off of Year Zero. This track was originally "leaked" as part of the Year Zero promotion. The "leaked" version had the ending, which when played through a linear spectrometer, revealed The Presence. On the Year Zero album, however, that ending is on the track, "The Warning". A remix of it exists on Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D.

The soundtrack for the Oliver Stone film, Natural Born Killers. The soundtrack was produced by Trent Reznor and features the NIN tracks "Burn", "A Warm Place" and an alternate version of "Something I Can Never Have".

A track that was written for, and used as an introduction track to NIN's set during the Lollapalooza tour in 1991.
