Recoiled is a semi-official remix EP credited to Coil and Nine Inch Nails. It is the commercial and physical release of selected tracks from the Uncoiled download-only remix compilation. It was released on February 24, 2014 on Cold Spring Records and was made available on CD, vinyl, limited edition vinyl and digital formats.

The tracks were new mixes re-created by Danny Hyde from his original source material, though they were initially believed to be outtakes from the remix sessions by all members of Coil for Fixed, Closer To God and Further Down The Spiral. Recoiled omits the tracks from Uncoiled that could be viewed as redundant and also adds an extra remix that was not included on Uncoiled.
Uncoiled
Uncoiled is an unofficial download-only remix compilation made up of new mixes re-created by Danny Hyde from his original source material, though they were initially believed to be outtakes from the remix sessions by all members of Coil for Fixed, Closer To God and Further Down The Spiral. A selection of these tracks was later semi-officially released as Recoiled.

Rumors of outtakes had been circulating since 1995 and in 2012, Hyde stated that he had multiple tracks in his possession. Funds were then raised by members of the Echoing The Sound forum to acquire the tracks and the collection was put up for free download in November 2012. It was later revealed by Hyde that the provenance of the remixes was not as initially understood, and that he had personally re-created them in response to being contacted by NIN fans. After the release of Uncoiled, Robin Rimbaud (aka scanner) unearthed a DAT with Coil remixes of NIN songs matching the names from the PHANTOM NIN SONGS portion of the NIN FAQ (see below). The audio matched what was on Further Down the Spiral - confirming that the rumors of unreleased Coil remixes were in fact just rumors.

Track Listing
#"Gave Up" (Open My Eyes) - 5:28
#"Closer" (Unrecalled) - 7:41
#"The Downward Spiral" (A Gilded Sickness) - 7:59
#"Eraser" (Reduction) - 8:45
#"Gave Up" (Flim Mix) - 3:45
#"Gave Up" (Coldcutter) - 1:29
#"Gave Up" (In Your Face) - 1:38
#"Gave Up" (Full Mix) - 1:50
#"Gave Up" (Full Mix+) - 2:07
#"Gave Up" (More Perc) - 1:43
#"Gave Up" (More Perc No Bass) - 1:42

*Those who donated to the project were also treated to the following bonus tracks: a mock demo version of "Closer" with commentary by Hyde and two other Hyde commentaries, one on remixing "Gave Up" and one on the project in general.

*The original, wide distribution download of Uncoiled has a mistakenly sped-up version of track 1. This was corrected for the donor download and Recoiled.

About
The original story from the torrent file:

On February 21, 1995, Stephanie Nahas posted to alt.music.nin about meeting up with Danny Lohner, who mentioned at the time that Coil had remixed Eraser for an upcoming remix album. Sometime in the next few months, someone with reliable contacts with the Coil and NIN camps let on that several remixes were completed by Coil, but not all of them made the remix album. The Nine Inch Nails discography was updated to add the following tracks to “NIN PHANTOM SONGS”

Eraser (a version with worms)

The Downward Spiral (a gilded sickness)

The Downward Spiral (fullblown)

These were added a few lines below this existing entry:
Gave Up(remix by coil, used in movie Young Americans, faster than fixed version and uses the same sound template according to John Balance of Coil. fixed version appears on soundtrack)

Over the years, NIN fans helped dig up tracks on that PHANTOM NIN SONGS list, but these proved elusive. Peter Christopherson was asked in 2007 about any unreleased remixes for the launch of remix.nin.com:
“Thanks for writing and listening over the years, but sorry - to the best of my recollection everything we did was already used by Trent in public, except the Broken Movie, which I understand is available from some pirate.com type sites.”

With the passing of John Balance and Peter Christopherson, I took the rumors of those remixes of The Downward Spiral and Eraser to be figments of the creative imagination of someone on alt.music.nin - as to the remix of Gave Up that appeared in Young Americans, that concretely existed. In 2012, longtime Echoing the Sound forum member Wizfan, hailing from Greece, contacted Danny Hyde:

“I had seen a YouTube video of yours a couple of years ago. You showed a box with the Nothing logo on it. Do you still have it? Could you tell us about it? We are interested in unreleased songs/remixes by Coil, NIN or other artists.”

The response he got was pretty exciting -
“sure i have many unreleased versions of Gave up and closer, mixes created on the days but different and unheard even by trent
I also have versions of the downward spiral and eraser mixes on a dat somewhere”

Eight months later, with the help of over fifty members of EchoingTheSound.org, remixes that have sat on DATs - some for over two decades - are now available for you to enjoy.

Special thanks to Wizfan for getting the ball rolling, to David D. Yuhnke for chasing down all the other phantom NIN tracks, Marius Andrei Dima for coming up with photography in very short order, and Danny Hyde for making this possible.

In an interview with compulsiononline.com, Danny Hyde explained how the remixes for Uncoiled actually came into being:

These remixes are known as the "pre-big studio-mixdown" mixes, could you elaborate on what that means and how these differ to the final issued recordings?

They were known as the pre-big studio mixes because as I said before I've got a huge, huge book which I used to type out. Before computers and printers I used to do it on the word processor from my notepads of the sessions where I scribbled everything down. I would type these up and store them and when the Nine Inch Nails forum boys said they'd heard about these outtakes and things I went back to the DATs from those days and found the rough cuts I did at my house before the big expensive one thousand pounds a day studio. What we'd do is copy the multitracks to DAT so we could take the sounds home. At my home I had a DAT machine digitally linked up to the sequencer, so I could digitally transfer the samples or the SMPTE could control the sequencer that could fire samples all through the mixing desk. I'd do a rough outline of what was happening that day. Pete would come over and we'd discuss bits and bobs and he'd join and we'd do stuff. With 'Closer' we actually worked in synch, as Pete did the same at his house and did a load of sessions. This was before Skype so we'd phone each other up and play down the phone where we were at and we knew we were in the same tempo and we knew we were in the same key as we were working to the same samples. So we knew that when we synched them ours would run and we could whittle down what we didn't need and we could synch it to the multitrack and take from that what we needed. So the pre big mix studio sessions were effectively all the pre big studio runs of what we were doing at home in the little studio. You'd do a little mixdown to DAT for your records so when you got to the big studio you could play it, if someone said "what are you thinking?" But before you set up all the machines and fired it at them you could play them that if they wandered in. And those DATs and subsequent notes those DAT created I reran a load of the sections that we had created, and I reran them exactly as we had done them. And I record all the notes, the effects, the levels and everything. If I didn't have a certain section as the DAT had corrupted or whatever I reran them again and cut and pasted between the various versions. The pre-big studio versions is exactly what it says; it's the versions that were done at home before the multi thousand pound machines were allowed to do the final mix. The final mix being all of these samples and the multitrack running through a big SSL mixing desk mixed down again to half-inch tape and the half-inch tape is sent to the pressing plant and they cut the vinyl.

2018 Extras
In 2018, Danny Hyde announced that he would be releasing additional remixes (based on those from Recoiled) as part of a special release for 26 spare pieces of the vinyl that he received from Cold Spring Records. He explained further on his website:

When the Recoiled vinyl records were constructed, bizarrely the factory sent me, as well as the finished records, 26 black vinyl records in clear plastic sleeve, no cover. I have pondered what to do with these for a few years. I have decided to sell them on. To make it interesting, I have labelled each, a letter from the alphabet and created a unique CD, with separate cover/sleeve label for each one. The CDs, and vinyl sleeve label are each unique for the 26 letters. Each CD contains the same 4 songs, BUT these are versions never heard before by anyone else still living. The buyer of one of these will be the only one of a possible 26 to own these versions of the songs, and ever hear them. You will not find them on YouTube, Spotify or anywhere. Of course I hope you keep these for yourself, but obviously that is not legally binding, it will be your choice, to share or not. Also you will have the vinyl record as well, of course. I have to get rid of these now; I am not sure of the time frame I will release each letter of the alphabet, but possibly a few this year, then sporadic. Who knows.

The 2018 remixes are titled as follows:
*Gave Up/Given Up (Intense mix) - 5:57
*Closer - Dreamspace Mix (Moody) - 7:52
*The Downward Spiral (Raw Mix) - 7:21
*Eraser/Erased Mix (Spartial Driven) - 6:57
The Warning (With Teeth song)
2019-12-04T05:09:24Z

Leviathant: Fixing formatting.

"The Warning" is a song hinted at in PDF lyric sheets of With Teeth. The song's lyrics were not legible on the PDF. It is not known if it even was recorded or not, along with "My Dead Friend," "Message To No One," and "The Life You Didn't Lead," the latter two also hinted on various posters and PDFs. "My Dead Friend" was hinted at during an interview pre-With Teeth.

A song with the title "The Warning" is on Year Zero.

When the 2019 Definitive Edition vinyl of With Teeth was released, the PDF was re-created as part of the packaging. Lyrics to "The Warning" were made legible and it was finally revealed that the track from Year Zero has its origins in the track from the With Teeth sessions.

Interestingly, the line "celebration of ignorance" comes directly from "Ahead Of Ourselves" from Bad Witch.

Lyrics
You can take this as a warning
You can take this as a sign
(???) [traitor?] among you
Waiting for his time
And it is coming
Yes Indeed
A celebration of ignorance
Self-importance and greed
The virus will eat the host
The virus will eat the host
Your time is tick tick ticking away
Your time is tick tick ticking away
And you won't do a thing
It's already over
Tick tock
Tick tock
The NIN Hotline
2019-11-26T06:52:26Z

Leviathant: Been a while since I updated this page that no one reads

expand
The NIN Hotline is a Nine Inch Nails news web site started in 1999. It is linked to by nin.com and is considered the finest NIN news source on the Net.

The site was created in June of 1999 while Matt Dunphy, aka Leviathant, was in between jobs, as a result of general community disapproval of the way NIN news sites at the time (such as Seems Like Salvation Nothing News & Above the Trees' news page, not to mention the long-idle news.nin.net) were handling things. In order to provide an alternative to the major news sites, which were each run by individuals, three members of the EFnet IRC chatroom #nin99 created a site on Xoom.com and shared the login information. Dunphy, Paul LaBarbera (aka Pablo), and John Sampson, aka }static{, were the original three collaborators, but soon more staff were added to help post news as it happened. Initially edited by copying and pasting HTML source code, at some point a hacked-to-bits version of the Guestbook Script from the infamous Matt's Script Archive was implemented, allowing accurate timestamping and a consistent layout. During 2000, French and German versions of the site arose, and plans were in the works for a Russian edition of the site as well, but that never quite materialized./

By the end of 2000, flaws in the "everyone is equal" method of running the site led to abuse of power by one of the staff, leading to a reorganization of the site in February 2001, paring staff back down to five people, including the original three founders. A new administrative backend was implemented on this revision, allowing much greater ability to add, change and delete news stories, archives were automated, and the layout was based off a (admittedly crude) template system. Unfortunately, the source code in this backend was especially horrible, and it was not successfully ported over to the German & French editions of the site, which eventually were removed entirely.

In 2004, alternate skins for the site were made available in blue, white, and black, based on photography by Hotline staff. In 2005, the layout was reorganized to be XHTML-strict and CSS2 compliant, an RSS feed was made available, and several external feeds were consumed and rebroadcast on the front page. In 2008, the site underwent another layout change, opting for a liquid layout that fills the screen regardless of screen resolution, influenced by the layout update to ninremixes.com. At the same time, the Year Zero ARG overwhelmed the format of the NIN Hotline, and the newly-founded NinWiki helped organize information about NIN in depth well beyond any fan site or individual page on Wikipedia.

In the 2010s, the hosting company where the NIN Hotline resided became unreliable - unannounced changes to the server sometimes broke the content management tool, and in 2014, a botched server move done without notification resulted in the deletion of the MySQL database, and the removal of the Perl interpreter rendered administration unusable. Regular updates migrated to Twitter, and the site withered on the proverbial vine while events in Dunphy's life ramped up. Hotline staffer Carrie Shetler Clark (aka sweeterthan) began managing the otherwise dormant Facebook presence of the site.

In 2019, twenty years after its foundation, the site was migrated to a new host, and underwent a complete redesign, featuring rotating cover artwork on a mobile-friendly interface, and elimination of all third-party tracking scripts. This was done as a move away from social networks, and a return to the independent web.
}}"The Perfect Drug" was written and recorded for the Lost Highway Soundtrack in 1996.

Trent Reznor has expressed dissatisfaction with the song, saying in a VIVA 2 Magazine interview,

"At that time I was listening to a lot of Drum 'n' Bass and Jungle and stuff. And I think that's the most I've ever seen external influence come out in my own music. And it was a transition period, that's what I want to stress, it was time when I was feeling out what I wanted to do artistically and given the liberation of working within the context of a soundtrack, it's not like a major work. I always treated that as an area to be freer and try things. I'm glad it was in that context. There was never any consideration to include that on [The Fragile]. It really was an area where I was feeling out the landscape to see what I wanted to do."

Versions
The Perfect Drug
This is the original version that can be found on the Lost Highway soundtrack as well as some editions of "The Perfect Drug" Versions. It features prominent acoustic guitars playing a quick, ascending riff similar to the chorus of "The Wretched". It is backed by frantic and complex drum machine programming commonly associated with the drum 'n' bass genre, which opens up into simpler patterns for the pre-choruses. The chorus features heavy guitars backed by more frantic drums, while the bridge is composed mainly of percussion patterns and percussive synthesizers and guitar riffs, which build in intensity to give way to a slower, simpler, quieter coda.

The Perfect Drug (Edit)
Running Time: 4:22

The original song shortened by fifty seconds to suit radio airplay. Available on radio promos only.

The Perfect Drug (We're In This Together version)
Running Time: 5:42

From the third We're In This Together single and international Into The Void single, this version is the same as the original, but does not cut off at the end, rather repeating further and fading out.

The Perfect Drug (Instrumental)
Running Time: 4:50

Released by Reznor via his account at remix.nin.com, this version features a differently-structured ending, but is otherwise the same as the original version minus the vocal tracks.

The Perfect Drug (Meat Beat Manifesto)
Running Time: 7:25

This remix is almost a dub mix: it is very light on lyrics and emphasizes the percussion beat of the song. The word "annihilate" is added at some points and leads this remix out of the breakdown and into the ending portion. "The only lyrics in this version are "And I want you" and "You are the perfect drug."

The Perfect Drug (Plug)
Running Time: 6:53

Incorporating dream-like synths and a danceable rhythm, this remix is notable for its synth rendition of the opening strains of the song. The last few lyrics of the first verse are used, "You are the perfect drug" is heard at the breakdown, and vocal instrumentation has been added. "Take me with you" is repeated at the end of this remix.

The Perfect Drug (Nine Inch Nails)
Running Time: 8:19

This remix begins with Reznor whispering "You are the perfect drug," distorted and slowed down. A dance beat and wind are added over the vocals to form the first section. The lyrics are then sung about a third of the way through, as the beat becomes heavier and the synths build in volume. By the middle of the song, the music becomes much louder as the lyric "Take me with you" is whispered over it. Vocal instrumentation, albeit distorted, is also incorporated into this remix. Perhaps the most notable aspect of this remix is the use of the "Closer" synth voice to replicate the melody at the end of the song.

The Perfect Drug (Spacetime Continuum)
Running Time: 5:42

Windchime-like instrumentation over a percussive beat and the whispered lyric "You are the perfect drug" open this remix. It then goes into a percolating beat, with a simple melody over a pulsing bass. This could be considered one of the "quieter" mixes of the song, as it is not as aggressive as the other remixes.

The Perfect Drug (The Orb)
Running Time: 6:11

This remix begins with the lyric "You are the perfect drug" heavily distorted as a swirling beat comes in over it. The word "drug" is also repeated at various points in this version. At about three minutes in, the lyric "Take me with you" is repeated as the mix goes into a pseudo-breakdown. At the breakdown, a bass line over percussion, leads into the song's finale.

The Perfect Drug (Aphrodite)
Running Time: 6:10 (Vinyl version), 5:38 (DJ Aphrodite upload)

This remix is exclusive to the vinyl edition of "The Perfect Drug" Versions. It's set in a different key than the other remixes and has a fast, electronic beat. As with most of the other remixes, it is light on lyrics, consisting only of "can't keep control/can't keep track," "taking me," and "you are perfect." The track as released in 1997 was mastered at a slower speed. An MP3 of this version was uploaded to the Rare & Unreleased playlist on remix.nin.com. The original, unaltered track was eventually uploaded to Soundcloud by DJ Aphrodite, who stated: "This is the original speed the remix was made at. For the vinyl, Nothing Records slowed it down to around 160bpm, perhaps to lower the vocals, and at the time the general music loving public were still not used to the speed and energy of Jungle/D&B."

Live
"The Perfect Drug" was not played live until September 18, 2018 at Red Rocks, Colorado, though it was attempted during rehearsals for a few previous tours. It was widely speculated that the complex drum solo in the song was responsible for this, although it was probably not out of the range of drummers Josh Freese or Ilan Rubin. It is also likely that Reznor does not personally like the song very much, as he concedes that it was produced quickly for the Lost Highway soundtrack.

NIN fan Trollmanen was able to ask ex-drummer Josh Freese about the rehearsal process for the song:

"The one question I asked him was about playing The Perfect Drug live, and how the rehearsal process went for that song and why it never worked out. The first thing he said, without hesitation was that the song itself isn't that difficult to play live on the drums. He said something about the programmed beats part was the only thing that was sort of complicated (it was a little hard to hear him at times, crappy connection), but that it worked live with him playing it. The drumming sounded good and everyone was happy with that. He said the problem with the song was the ending. The whole song was really rocking and pushing through, then you get to the ending and it just never seemed to work. He said they tried four or so different endings to the song. They tried it kinda mellow sounding, and that didn't work. They tried a really aggressive ending, and that didn't work either. They did a simple ending, same result. They just couldn't find an ending to the sound that seemed to do it justice. The thing was that the song sounded really good, but to get to the ending and just not sound good, it was kind of a let down. He said [Trent Reznor] just seemed uninterested with it after a while and they just gave up on it."

Fellow NIN fan Whiskers had previously asked the same when he had lunch with the drummer. link

Reznor answered a question about playing "The Perfect Drug" live directly during a 2017 Q&A in Chicago. He said:

"We've tried it. The unsexy answer is it just doesn't sound that good live. And it's hard to sing, and it ends up making me angry, so we don't do it."

Music Video
Mark Romanek, who also directed "Closer," directed the music video for "The Perfect Drug" in 1997. It was one of the most expensive videos at the time, costing over $850,000 to make. Building the two main sets (a refrigerated set and a rooftop set) and commissioning the giant hand sculpture were some of the larger expenses.

The concept of the video is widely interpreted as Trent Reznor portraying a man mourning the death of a child and detaching himself from reality through absinthe. Charlie Clouser, Danny Lohner, and Chris Vrenna appear in the video, most notably playing string instruments at the beginning of the video. The aesthetics were heavily influenced by the illustrations of 20th-century artist Edward Gorey (1925–2000), the most obvious reference coming from the boy sitting on the cushion in front of the painting.

The entire video was filmed with a blue tint with the exception of the drum breakdown, which uses flashing green light instead, representing Reznor losing himself in the absinthe.
Lyrics
I got my head, but my head is unraveling
Can't keep control, can't keep track of where it's traveling
I got my heart but my heart's no good
And you're the only one that's understood
I come along but I don't know where you're taking me
I shouldn't go but you're wrenching, dragging, shaking me
Turn off the sun, pull the stars from the sky
The more I give to you, the more I die

And I want you
You are the perfect drug
The perfect drug
The perfect drug

You make me hard when I'm all soft inside
I see the truth when I'm all stupid-eyed
The arrow goes straight through my heart
Without you everything just falls apart
My blood wants to say hello to you
My fears want to get inside of you
My soul is so afraid to realize
How very little there is left of me

And I want you
You are the perfect drug
The perfect drug
The perfect drug

Take me, with you
Without you
Without you everything falls apart
Without you it's not as much fun to pick up the pieces
While I'm Still Here
This is the original album version. A simplistic track, it is dominated by its quirky beat and staccato plucked string instruments. A busy bassline joins the ascending vocals in the verses, while the nearly spoken choruses are backed by a droning synth. After the second chorus, a sort of coda or bridge featuring a more complicated bassline and staccato baritone saxophone leads directly into "Black Noise."
Lyrics
Only thing I've ever done
Ticking time's running out
Closest I've ever come
Ticking time's running out

Oh so tired on my own
Ticking time's running out
Best days I've ever known
Ticking time's running out

Yesterday I found out the world was ending
Yesterday I found out the world was ending

A little more
Every day
Falls apart and
Slips away well
I don't mind
I'm okay
Wish it didn't
Have to end this way

These four walls are closing in
Ticking time's running out
Oh all the things that might have been
Ticking time's running out

Watch young lovers walking by
Ticking time's running out
God forgive me if I cry
Ticking time's running out

A little more
Every day
Falls apart and
Slips away yeah
I don't mind
I'm okay
Nothing ever
Stays the same well

While we can
Remember when
Always were here
Even then
Stay with me
Hold me near

The March 1995 issue of Volume Magazine out of Tampa had a blurb stating the following:
"New Orleans music fans were treated to a lot of loudness last month... and it wasn't Mardi Gras! During Feb 16, 17, and 18, Nine Inch Nails and recent nothing records signees PWEI, Marilyn Manson & Prick performed a special nothing records showcase. NIN's Trent Reznor, prez of the label, which is based in his old homestead of Cleveland, decideed it would be a neat idea to end NIN's winter tour with an extravaganza of music from his new label's lineup."
Just putting this here until more evidence surfaces.

Last
This is the original album version. Very guitar-oriented and immediate, the song also features abrasive vocals by Reznor during the verses but melodic singing in the choruses, a contrast repeated in later songs like "Head Down." The chorus musically contrasts the verses as well, containing no guitar but moving much quicker and with synthesizers instead. The song can be seen in three sections mediated by two guitar-only breaks, similar in approach to later material like "Reptile." The end features a buildup consisting of the verse music and a single repeated phrase, which eventually gives way to the opening guitar of "Help Me I Am In Hell."
The lyrics "I wish I could put the blame on you" can be heard faintly from 3:12.

Throw This Away
This minimalist remix, on Fixed, contains elements from both "Last" and "Suck." Opening with bubbling synthesizer loops, it mostly consists of the bass riff from the middle of "Suck," which is repeated throughout the track. Layered below it are various quiet vocal samples from both songs. Eventually, the drum beat featured at the very end of the original bridge in "Suck" is looped and fades in, eventually segueing directly into the ending of Butch Vig's mix of "Last."
Song Credits
*Remixed by Trent Reznor and Chris Vrenna (section A), Butch Vig (section B)

Last (Butch Vig Remix)
This remix has never been commercially released. It was originally uploaded the Cyberden FTP server by "someone in chemlab's camp" as an 8-bit/11kHz AIFF file on February 2, 1994, which circulated as the only available copy until Reznor hosted a CD-quality MP3 of the song in his remix.nin.com profile. Musically the opposite of the original, it features completely new guitar parts and drum loops, giving the song more of a radio rock feel. Its ending was incorporated into "Throw This Away."

Live
"Last," despite being on the 1992 release Broken, was not played live until February 10, 2007, in Libson, Portugal, the first show of the Performance 2007 tour. It was the second song in the set, following "Mr. Self Destruct." It has since been a rarity to setlists, though it was often paired with "We're In This Together" on the same tour.
Lyrics
Gave up trying to figure it out my head got lost along the way
Worn out from giving it up my soul I pissed it all away
Still stings these shattered nerves
Pigs we get what pigs deserve
I'm going all the way down I'm leaving today

Come come on you've gotta fill me up
Come come gotta let me inside of you
Come come come on you've gotta fix me up
Come come gotta let me inside of you

Still feel it all slipping away but it doesn't matter anymore
Everybody's still chipping away but it doesn't matter anymore
Look though these blackened eyes
You'll see ten thousand lies
My lips may promise but my heart is a whore

Come come come on you've gotta fix me up
Come come gotta let me inside of you
Come come come on you've gotta fill me up
Come come gotta let me get through to you

This isn't meant to last
This is for right now

I know it's all getting away and it comes to me as no surprise
I know what's coming to me is never going to arrive
Fresh blood through tired skin
New sweat to drown me in
Dress up this rotten carcass just to make it look alive

Come come come on you've gotta fill me up
Come come gotta let me inside of you
Come come come on you've gotta fix me up
Come come gotta let me get through to you

This isn't meant to last
This is for right now
I wish I could put the blame on you

I want you to make me
I want you to take me
I want you to break me
Then I want you to throw me away

Last
This is the original album version.

Last (Butch Vig Remix)
This remix has never been commercially released. It was originally uploaded the Cyberden FTP server by "someone in chemlab's camp" as an 8-bit/11kHz AIFF file in 1993 or 1994, which circulated as the only available copy until Reznor hosted a CD-quality MP3 of the song in his remix.nin.com profile.

Echoing The Sound

expand
Echoing the Sound (commonly abbreviated as ETS) is an Internet forum for discussions about Nothing Records artists, most prominently Nine Inch Nails.

Echoing the Sound was created in 2002 as a collaborative effort between AdamSelene (Greg), drunkpoet (Cliff), and tragic_eros (Tyler), in reaction to the sudden shutdown of the forums at Evan Moore's SeemsLikeSalvation website. Orestes and Leviathant were brought in before launch to help out with the site, which saw public launch in November 2002. Originally running on IkonBoard software, the board saw a split in early 2003 that saw tragic_eros leave ETS to form another board that more closely matched his vision. Around this time, ETS began using PHPBB software, which Greg has since hacked to bits and reassembled into its current form. In early 2005, in response to overwhelming traffic related to tour pre-sales, the board was redesigned with a very minimal approach, to cut back on bandwidth and processing time.

In late 2011, the server on which ETS resided suffered a catastrophic hard drive failure. While backups of the database were made periodically, they were not stored offsite. The board was rebooted by Leviathant and Malechite, now running vBulletin and residing on the same server as The NIN Hotline.

ETS has become the most popular NIN forum on the Internet and is often the place where news and rumors about the band first appear. It has also become the central collaboration point for the Year Zero metagame.

Aside from Nine Inch Nails topics, there are popular general discussion forums on music, film, and current events.

Pretty Hate Machine (also known as Halo 2) is the first studio album by Nine Inch Nails, released on October 20, 1989 by TVT Records and was a huge success. The first single off of the album, Down In It, was released on September 27, 1989.

It received radio airplay for the aforementioned "Down In It" as well as subsequent singles "Head Like A Hole" and "Sin".

Recording
Working nights at Right Track Studio as a handyman and toilet cleaner, Trent Reznor used studio "down time" to record and develop his own music. Playing most of the keyboards, drum machines, guitars, and samplers himself, he recorded a demo, unofficially titled Purest Feeling.

Teaming up with manager John A. Malm, Jr. they sent the demo to various record labels. Reznor received serious offers from many of them. He signed a deal with TVT Records who, until then, were known mainly for releasing novelty and television jingle records.

Pretty Hate Machine was recorded in various studios around the world with Reznor collaborating with some of his most idolized producers - Flood, Keith LeBlanc, Adrian Sherwood, and John Fryer.

Subsequent Touring
For more information, see Pretty Hate Machine Tour

The album also gained popularity through word-of-mouth and developed an underground following. Reznor quickly hired a band for touring with The Jesus and Mary Chain, including guitarist and future Filter/Army of Anyone frontman Richard Patrick. Nine Inch Nails' live set was notorious for louder, more aggressive versions of the studio songs, and also for destroying their instruments at the end of sets. Reznor preferred using the heel of his boots to strip the keys from keyboards.

Purest Feeling
Since the album was released, a recording known as Purest Feeling surfaced. This bootleg album contains the original demo recordings of most of the tracks found on Pretty Hate Machine, as well as a couple that were not used ("Purest Feeling" and "Maybe Just Once").

Tributes
The entire album was covered by a string quartet in 2005 as The String Quartet Tribute to Nine Inch Nails' Pretty Hate Machine, arranged by Eric Gorfain.

Rykodisc Re-Release
Pretty Hate Machine went out of print through TVT Records, but was reissued by Rykodisc Records on November 22, 2005 with slight changes in the packaging. Prudential owned TVT's Nine Inch Nails recordings, but Rykodisc leased the rights. Reznor had expressed an interest in creating a "deluxe edition" with surround sound remastering and new/rare remixes, similar to the re-release of The Downward Spiral. Rykodisc liked the idea, but not enough to pay Reznor to do so.

Bicycle Music Re-Release
In April 2010, Bicycle Music bought the entirety of TVT's catalogue, including Pretty Hate Machine. They confirmed that they would be reissuing the album once more, and there was speculation that they would be willing to release the deluxe edition proposed by TVT in 2005.

The co-publishing rights to Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails catalog include the songs from all album releases from Pretty Hate Machine through Year Zero. As well, in acquiring the master recording rights to NIN’s groundbreaking debut, Pretty Hate Machine, Bicycle will be responsible for re-releasing this album which has been out of print and unavailable through digital distribution outlets for several years. “It goes without saying how important these works are to the entire landscape of Alternative Rock. Our team sees incredible creative and business opportunities with this catalog and we look forward to working with our new partners and artists," said Steve Salm, Partner at Bicycle.

On October 22, Reznor announced that the reissue was to be a remastered edition, stating on nin.com:

I'm happy to finally announce the re-issue of the first Nine Inch Nails record "Pretty Hate Machine", releasing worldwide 11/22. UMe and Bicycle Music Group managed to locate the original mixes, so I went in the studio with Tom Baker and remastered it for a greatly improved sonic experience. In addition, Rob reinterpreted Gary Talpas' original cover to make for a fresh new package.

It's been an interesting trip watching the fate of this record float from one set of hands to another (a long and depressing story) but it's finally wound up in friendly territory, allowing us to polish it up a bit and present it to you now. We had fun revisiting this old friend, hope you enjoy.
In March 2011 an ETS user named wishtheend contacted Tom Baker at Precision Mastering with some questions about the mastering of the re-release:

* Vinyl was mastered from hi-res/24-bit source audio (i'm going to guess 96khz, but he didn't specify)
* The CDs had a separate production master, made from the same hires/24-bit source the Vinyl Production Master was made from)
* The Vinyl Production Master was about 4-6db RMS lower (maybe more) than the levels the CD Production Master was taken to
* When the actual vinyl discs were cut, an additional low-filter (hipass), desser and hyper-elliptical filter were put in place.
Cover Art
Reznor stated in one of his posts on the Prodigy service in the early 90s that:

"The cover of PHM is a photo of the blades of some sort of turbine stretched vertically so they would look somewhat like bones or a rib cage."

In an interview with Sleevage.com, Rob Sheridan described the long process he went through to update the artwork for the re-issue:

When we began the Pretty Hate Machine remaster project, Trent discussed with me the idea of tweaking the original artwork a bit to reflect that this was a different version of the album, updated from its original release. We talked about maybe just changing the color scheme a bit – Trent was keen on losing the distinctly 80′s hot pink color, for one. It seemed like a fairly straightforward project, as I certainly didn’t want to try and radically alter an album cover I’d been looking at since I was a teenager, and that some fans had known very well for more than two decades.

The first bump in the road was that no one had the original artwork. We left no stone unturned – we even reached out to the original designer, Gary Talpas, but he had given all his materials to Nothing Records long ago. Our best guess is that those materials were lost somewhere in Trent’s split with his old management. I tried scanning the old vinyl cover, but it was poorly printed and looked like an absolute mess when scanned. Even after cleaning it up a bit, attempting to separate the colors was fairly disastrous, and the resolution was terrible.

In 2004 I redesigned NIN’s The Downward Spiral for its 10th anniversary Deluxe Edition. In that case, Trent still had all of Russell Mills’ original art pieces that were used in the album, so I was able to re-photograph them and present the artwork in a new and interesting way. With this album, I didn’t have that luxury. It became clear to me that I was going to have to start from scratch.

I tried a number of different approaches – I even got some various mechanical parts from hardware stores and arranged them in a way that resembled the shape of the cover image (I’d remembered reading long ago that the original image was taken of some sort of factory machine, with spokes that looked like ribs), and photographed it in different ways, then attempted to push the contrast of the photos and pull shapes out of them. Nothing was working out very well though. It either looked too far away from the original cover, or like a weird, sad imitation of it.

Finally, I decided to painstakingly recreate the original cover as closely as possible. Using my scan of the original as a template, I digitally painted the image in extremely high resolution, the same way I’d approach an illustration. I used a meticulous set of masks to recreate the “interlaced” horizontal line effect of the original cover. After a lot of trial-and-error, I eventually finished with a new version of the original artwork, created in a very different way, but retaining the same spirit.

At this point I was free to play with the color scheme. I tried a wide variety of colors, ranging from darker, more muted versions of the original color scheme, to ones that looked nothing like the original. The favorite – both of Trent and myself – was the dark blue/blue/off-white combo used in the final image. It was a bit similar to a PHM t-shirt that’s been around for a while, so there was a sense of familiarity in the colors.

I then carefully recreated the title font from the original cover, and the black frames it sat in. The font, a stretched-out version of Helvetica, looked dated to me, but I wanted to be respectful of the original design and not mess with it too much. When Trent saw what I’d done though, he wanted to try a new approach to the title text, as he felt the font was just too dated and could use a more modern look for this remaster. So I went back to the original album and looked at the font that had been used for the credits and lyrics, which turned out to be a slight variation of a font Gary Talpas later used in The Downward Spiral. Putting the PHM title in that font was way too similar to The Downward Spiral, but when I put it in caps it created an odd mix of vintage NIN and modern NIN – perfect for a 2010 remaster of a 1989 album. Trent liked this approach much better, and we settled on the way we wanted the title set on the album cover. The image sitting behind it – my recreated artwork – still felt a bit flat, though.

To push the art a bit further, I got the idea of printing the image out at a very high DPI and photographing it with a narrow depth of field, allowing parts of it to fall out of focus. This gave a new depth to the previously flat artwork, and it turned out to be exactly what the image was missing. After quite a few experiments, I ended up with the image that is now the cover, and immediately felt I’d finally gotten this thing to where I’d wanted it to be. I sent it to Trent without any of the type or anything on it, and while he’d been somewhat lukewarm on the previous material, he was immediately excited about this one. “That looks fucking great,” he told me, “we’ve got it.” I put the black frame and our new type treatment over the new cover image, and everything clicked. The new cover, with the unmistakable shape of the “ribs” and the interlacing effect, remained respectful to the original and still recognizable, while adding a more modern feel and a “fresh coat of paint” on the colors. This is not meant to replace the original cover. This is the cover for this 2010 remastered edition of the album.

The original CD cover was oriented sideways, which had never felt right to me, as the vinyl cover had a distinct vertical orientation of the full image (something I preserved in the new vinyl edition). I’d always wondered if it was a byproduct of the way the insert needed to sit in the jewel case. Either way, I wanted to bring the vertical orientation over to the CD this time around, but I also wanted to preserve the way the whole image folded out from the cover in the original CD insert. We certainly didn’t want to put this in a jewel case, so to accomplish the vertical fold-out, I came up with a unique L-shaped digipak package, where a panel folds down from the cover to reveal a vertical extension of the artwork. I also decided to put the black frame and the title text on a transparent O-card that slides over the digipak (very similar to what we did on The Downward Spiral Deluxe Edition) – so when you slide the O-card off, the image underneath is bare. It turns the black “frame” around the image into an actual frame, adding a new layer of depth to the art.

For the remainder of the package, I was cautious not to add much extra artwork and overdo it. The original sleeve was extremely minimal, only using type on black amidst a few variations of the cover image here and there for the internal art, so I wanted to preserve that. Some might say it’s boring to have plain black pages with text on them for the lyrics, but I’d rather stay true to what had been done previously than add a bunch of art and risk having it feel like an altogether different album. The only other piece of art in the original insert was a photograph of Trent. Revisiting that, Trent wasn’t incredibly excited about including it in this version, and we didn’t have the original photograph anyway, so we left it out.

Throughout this process, I was very concerned with being respectful to the original artwork. This is not my album, and as a fan for many years, I have the same attachment to the original art that many other fans do. So my tendency was to play it safe, but it was Trent who felt a bit less precious about the original art, and he pushed me to do something that was visually further away from what I had originally intended. I think in the end we found a great middle ground, and we’re both really pleased with how it turned out. Recreating the art – somewhat by necessity – was a huge honor, and so far it seems fans are generally pretty pleased with what we’ve done…even if there’s no pink in it.

The only rejected ideas were my own ideas that I rejected before I showed them to anybody – mostly in the department of trying to recreate the artwork photographically. That was the only time I was tempted to do something dramatically different from the original art – for the most part my instinct was to not drift very far from the original, as it just didn’t feel right to me. Redesigning an album you listened to over and over again as a teenager is a pretty strange task, so I was understandably cautious.

I don’t know what Gary thinks of the new design, but he was very friendly when we reached out with him and said he really liked all the stuff we’ve been doing with NIN’s design in recent years. I hope he appreciates what we did with the new cover.
I thought it was going to be a simple job, but the fact that we didn’t have the source art made it actually quite a project. Between my various failed experiments at recreating the art photographically, the meticulous way I ended up doing it by hand, and the amount of finessing it took to find the right presentation, it was actually quite a bit of work, and we had a pretty abrupt deadline for it. All things considered I’m pleased with the way it turned out.

They confirmed that they would be reissuing the album once more, and there is speculation that they would be willing to release the deluxe edition proposed by TVT in 2005.

On October 22, Reznor announced that the reissue was to be a remastered edition, with album art re-interpreted by Rob Sheridan, to be released November 22. In addition, it will have NIN's cover of Queen's Get Down, Make Love as a bonus 11th track.

An early effort called "The Industrial Nation" was rejected by TVT. This led Reznor to take tracks from the denied earlier works. Pretty Hate Machine was then recorded in various studios around the world with Reznor collaborating with some of his most idolized producers - Flood, Keith LeBlanc, Adrian Sherwood, and John Fryer.

Reznor preferred using the heel of his boots to strip the keys from expensive keyboards.

They confirmed that they would be reissuing the album once more, and there is speculation that they would be willing to release the deluxe edition proposed by TVT in 2005.

Our team sees incredible creative and business opportunities with this catalog and we look forward to working with our new partners and artists”, said Steve Salm, Partner at Bicycle
}}"Into The Void" is the second track on the Right side of the double album The Fragile. It was featured heavily in many promos for the album, although it was only released as a single in Australia. The track "Slipping Away" is an extended and remixed form of an earlier version of this song, and is included on the remix album Things Falling Apart.

Musical Themes
"Into The Void" is one of several songs on The Fragile that shares a melody with one or more other songs. "Into the Void" is a sister-track to "La Mer," also from The Fragile; both songs grew out of the same initial track and feature the same bass line and melody. As well, the melody played by gamelan at the beginning of the song is echoed as a piano theme at the end of "We're in This Together." Lyrically, Trent Reznor laments over his failed attempts of self-preservation as he is sucked into a void of depravity, illustrated by the chorus, "tried to save myself, but myself keeps slipping away."
Versions
Into The Void
This is the original album version. Quietly transitioning from "The Way Out Is Through," it begins by building layers of percussion and melody before launching into the main body of the song, featuring a danceable beat loop and synthesized bassline. Reznor's layered vocals are a prominent feature of the track, overlapping through the wordless choruses, during which they are joined by sustaining guitars playing a noisy, descending guitar part. This riff is similar in structure to the one at the peak of "The Mark Has Been Made." The instrumental bridge of the song stops suddenly, only to re-emerge soon after with a squealing synthesizer solo. A final, extended chorus ends the song, with a trademark NIN wall-of-sound buildup around the lyric "Tried to save myself, but myself keeps slipping away". This line is the final moment of the song, sung a capella.

Into The Void (Edit)
Radio edit released on the Into The Void 2-track promo, shortening its length.

Slipping Away
This remix, on Things Falling Apart, contains many musical and rhythmic references to "Into The Void," but the lyrics consist solely of different vocal takes of the lines "I keep slipping away" and "Tried to save myself." Building instrumentally from percussive loops and guitars, a brief stop introduces the lyrics. Consistent in its thumping beat throughout the track, it continues to build through different melodies and synthesizer layers, eventually being overcome by distorted layers of guitar. It segues directly into the quieter "The Great Collapse."

Music Video
A music video was made for this song. Released on January 14, 2000, it was directed by Walter Stern and Jeff Richter. It features macrophotography, offering extreme close-up shots of Reznor until zooming out and revealing the entire band performing the song in a red room, with Reznor on keyboards. The band destroys the set at the end of the video.

An alternate version of this video has recently surfaced, directed entirely by Stern. The scenes of the band in the red room are gone and have been replaced by scenes of the band performing the song in an all-white room, with a woman seen in some of the shots of the band. This woman can also be seen in extreme close-up in some of the scenes in the first 2/3 of the video. There are also some extreme close-up shots used that didn't make it into the Stern/Richter version of the video. Intercut with the band scenes at the end are more extreme close-ups of Reznor.

Near the end of the original video, the band ends up smashing their equipment. One of the casualties is a Nord Modular Keyboard that Trent Reznor is playing. That specific keyboard went up for sale on eBay on December 3rd, 2009 and was listed with the serial number MA97110098.

Live
"Into The Void" was performed live several times on the Fragility tours, and began seeing regular rotation starting with the With Teeth: Summer Amphitheater Tour.
}}"Physical" is a hidden track on 1992's Broken EP that was originally written and performed by Adam and the Ants on their 1980 album Kings of the Wild Frontier.

When Broken was first released, this and another extra track, "Suck," were on a Mini CD that was packaged with the EP. But after allegations that some music stores were removing the mini CD and selling it separately, the two tracks were incorporated onto the EP as tracks 98 and 99, with tracks 7–97 consisting of one second of silence each.

At the beginning (approx. 27 sec.) of the song, Trent Reznor can be heard saying, "Eat your heart out, Steve." This is possibly directed towards Steve Gottlieb of TVT Records with whom Reznor had been feuding, as Gottlieb would not let him out of his contract. The entirety of Broken was created without the knowledge of TVT.

In the credits, "Barks and Roars" are attributed to Maise, Trent's dog at the time of recording. At 3:36, barking and "Ow! Fucker" is heard being played at half speed over the track, as Maise - then a puppy - was playing with someone in the studio, and bit that someone. (One of the recording techniques employed on both Suck and Physical was to play the guitar riff at double the speed of the track, and play the resulting recording back at half speed, for a unique, extra thick sound)

According to a previously unreleased interview Reznor did with Melody Maker magazine, "Physical" was supposed to be a "tongue-in-cheek" cover.

It should be noted that the Adam Ant version is named "Physical (You're So)" and features an extra verse.
This is the original version found on the Broken EP. It begins with layers of ambience and feedback before erupting into a guitar- and drum-heavy first verse. The chorus introduces a new, chugging chord progression before returning to the power chords and riff of the second verse. A bridge after the second chorus leads to the climactic final chorus variation, which descends into more feedback and whispering.

Live
This track was rarely played live post-1993, but resurfaced on the Wave Goodbye Tour.
Lyrics
I want to date you maybe
I want to take you out
I want to wine and dine you
I want to twist and twist and shout
I want you hard in my arms
So soft on my bed
You get the keys to my heart
When you wear that sweet dress
(You know, the short one)

You're so physical, physical for me
You're just too physical, physical, for me

I want your roughhouse baby
I want this night in your ear
Let me feel you danger
I want to make this feeling clear
I want the touch of your charms
The heat of your breath
I want to say all those things
(Those dirty things)
That would be better unsaid
}}"The Day The World Went Away" is the second track on the Left disc of The Fragile. It was released as a single preceding the release of The Fragile and received the designation of Halo 13.

Meaning
The song's lyrics are rumored to be about the death of Trent Reznor's maternal grandmother, which occured before The Fragile was recorded. Analysis of the lyrics do support the theory of this song being about death, but no one can say with any certainty what Reznor's inspiration was.

Structure
"The Day The World Went Away" follows the percussive and aggressive "Somewhat Damaged." It is one of Nine Inch Nails' most uniquely structured songs and it is musically the opposite of "Somewhat Damaged" in almost every way, actually lacking the use of any percussion. It also features the use of a mandolin, another first for NIN.

Song Credits
*Backing chants by the Buddha Debutante Choir: Melissa Daigle, Judy Miller, Christine Parrish, M. Gabriela Rivas, Heather Bennett, Fae Young and Martha Wood
*Additional vocals on “Quiet:” Kim Prevost

Versions
The Day The World Went Away
This is the original album version, found on both The Day The World Went Away (in edited form and with a different vocal take) and The Fragile. Its introductory guitar chords are extended by roughly 30 seconds on The Fragile vinyl version.

The Day The World Went Away (Single Version)
In this version, the ambient noise fades in at the beginning, and the first abrasive guitars kick in seven seconds later than they do in the CD album version. The final part is only half as long, though.

The Day The World Went Away (Quiet)
This is a very different version of the song. The structure was changed significantly, moving the chanting to the beginning of the song and featuring additional vocals by Kim Prevost. This remix was done by Reznor.

The Day The World Went Away (Porter Ricks mix)
This dub remix done by Porter Ricks revolves around a thumping beat. The distant vocals can be heard beneath it.

The Day The World Went Away (And All That Could Have Been)
The DVD version of And All That Could Have Been featured this song as an Easter Egg. Unused clips from the scrapped video are merged with live performance footage. The CD version features this song in the regular playlist.

The Day The World Went Away (Still)
A stripped down, acoustic version of this song was included on the Still album.
Music Video
This song is among the many Nine Inch Nails songs that have had a video scrapped. The video, which was partially finished, apparently showed images of a funeral. Parts of the video appeared as an Easter Egg on the DVD version of And All That Could Have Been.

The footage contains black-and-white footage of Reznor in a forest, and color images of a black kingsnake slithering in sand. It also includes Reznor standing in a room with his back to the camera and shows flowers, as well as a feather blowing in the wind. Right before it cuts to the black-and-white footage of Reznor, for a split second, it shows a man, maybe Reznor, hovering in the air in a red room. Right in front of him is a bright light that instantly brightens, making the screen white for the black-and-white footage to come in. The second half of the video contains live performance footage of the band.

In November 2000, a post was made to the forum at now defunct dirty.org, stating the following about the footage shot by Tomato for the original, unreleased version of the video:

"The video was black and white. I have seen rushes of it. It featured a funeral, Trent
at the funeral (in the style of 'November Rain'). I also saw footage of a black haired
beautiful girl. She really did stand out, the other people had 'common' 'nonspecific'
faces. It was Trent attending a funeral and seeing this girl. Then he follows her. That's
about all I can remember. Trent thought it was too personal, because of the connection
of the song with his grandmother. So that's why we never got to see it."

Live
"The Day The World Went Away" has been performed live since the Fragility tour started in 1999.

When performed live, the middle of the song is extended after the verse and the guitar progression. This extension seems to be modeled after the Quiet mix, but features a tom-driven drum rhythm as well as the guitar doubling the bassline in a higher register. This new section builds in intensity as melodic synthesizers welcome in the wordless group vocals, eventually becoming more bombastic and louder until ending with two power chords. An example of this altered structure can be found on And All That Could Have Been.

Lyrics
I'd listen to the words he'd say
But in his voice I heard decay
The plastic face forced to portray
All the insides left cold and gray
There is a place that still remains
It eats the fear it eats the pain
The sweetest price he'll have to pay
The day the whole world went away

Na na nah
Na na na, nah
Na na nah
Na na na, nah
Music Video
There were plans for a music video to be directed by Francis Lawrence, edited by Mario Mares, with Max Goldman as director of photography, but it was scrapped during post-production, not long after details about the video leaked to the web. Reznor commented on the scrapped video on Echoing the Sound:

Regarding EDIETS, there will be no video released. I made a mistake.
The good news is that mistake has acted as a catalyst for me to
rethink a number of decisions regarding the direction and position of
the band I've made and will be making in the future.
The enemies from outside and within have been identified and I am back on track.
Live
"Every Day Is Exactly The Same" has been played live since the Live: With Teeth tour in 2005.

Lyrics
I believe I can see the future
Because I repeat the same routine
I think I used to have a purpose
And then again that might have been a dream
I think I used to have a voice
Now I never make a sound
I just do what I've been told
I really don't want them to come around
Oh no

Every day is exactly the same
There is no love here and there is no pain
Every day is exactly the same

I can feel their eyes are watching
In case I lose myself again
Sometimes I think I'm happy here
Sometimes I still pretend
I can't remember how this all got started
But I can tell you —exactly— How it will end

Every day is exactly the same
Every day is exactly the same
There is no love here and there is no pain
Every day is exactly the same

I'm writing on a little piece of paper
I'm hoping someday you might find
I'll hide it behind something
They don't look behind
I am still inside here
A little bit comes bleeding through
I wish this could have been any other way
I just don't know what else I can do

Every day is exactly the same

Additional lyrics printed in the With Teeth PDF booklet, but not appearing in the song itself

And I've rehearsed my lines
And I know what's coming next
Every Day Is Exactly The Same (Interpol Mix Edit)
This track is exclusive to the European 3-track promo, on which it is the second track.

Every Day Is Exactly The Same (Edit)
An uncredited remix of the song from a very limited European promo. It is actually an altered version of the original song, with some lyrics omitted, minor differences at the music (for example, it's played in a slightly higher key), and a different ending. A CD-quality MP3 version was uploaded by Reznor on remix.nin.com.

Every Day Is Exactly The Same (Live At Rehearsals)
This version of the song is exclusive to the Beside You In Time DVD. It was filmed and recorded in the band's rehearsal space in early 2005.

Music Video
There were plans for a music video to be directed by Jonathan Glazer, but it was scrapped during post-production, not long after details about the video leaked to the web. Reznor commented on the scrapped video on Echoing the Sound:

Regarding EDIETS, there will be no video released. I made a mistake.
The good news is that mistake has acted as a catalyst for me to rethink a number of decisions regarding the direction and position of the band I've made and will be making in the future.
The enemies from outside and within have been identified and I am back on track.

Meathead created a Flash video for the song based on the leaked information. Footage of a performance from tour rehearsals is included in the Beside You In Time DVD as a special feature.

Live
"Every Day Is Exactly The Same" has been played live since the Live: With Teeth tour in 2005.

Lyrics
I believe I can see the future
Because I repeat the same routine
I think I used to have a purpose
And then again that might have been a dream
I think I used to have a voice
Now I never make a sound
I just do what I've been told
I really don't want them to come around
Oh no

Every day is exactly the same
There is no love here and there is no pain
Every day is exactly the same

I can feel their eyes are watching
In case I lose myself again
Sometimes I think I'm happy here
Sometimes I still pretend
I can't remember how this all got started
But I can tell you —exactly— How it will end

Every day is exactly the same
Every day is exactly the same
There is no love here and there is no pain
Every day is exactly the same

I'm writing on a little piece of paper
I'm hoping someday you might find
I'll hide it behind something
They don't look behind
I am still inside here
A little bit comes bleeding through
I wish this could have been any other way
I just don't know what else I can do

Every day is exactly the same

Additional lyrics printed in the With Teeth PDF booklet, but not appearing in the song itself

And I've rehearsed my lines
And I know what's coming next
}}"The Hand That Feeds" is the first single of the fifth album With Teeth, and it has received the designation of Halo 18. It began playing on Nine Inch Nails' official MySpace page before its radio release. The multitracks for this song were released via nin.com.

Meaning
"The Hand That Feeds" is a verbal attack on the United States Government, specifically the Bush Administration and its foreign policy, but can be interpreted as speaking out against abusive authority in general.

2005 MTV Movie Awards
Nine Inch Nails was scheduled to perform this song live at the 2005 MTV Movie Awards, but MTV denied Trent Reznor's request to perform in front of a large image of President George W. Bush's face. As a result, Reznor decided to cancel the performance. NIN was replaced by the Foo Fighters.

Reznor responded on the Official NIN Website:

We were set to perform 'The Hand That Feeds' with an unmolested, straightforward
image of George W. Bush as the backdrop. Apparently, the image of our President
is as offensive to MTV as it is to me. See you on tour this fall when we return
to play in America.
Music Video
The video for this song was directed by Rob Sheridan and Reznor, debuting at NIN.com on March 17, 2005. It's a basic performance video, filmed with a digital camera in the band's rehearsal space. The film has been tinted blue and some distortion does occur, due to the nature of the camera and how it responds to fast movements. The video also features a digital zoom—the image appears so pixelated and interlaced because Sheridan used key-framing to create digital camera movements and zooms in post, giving the visuals an even grittier feel.

The video caused quite a stir throughout the NIN community. Some didn't like the song, whereas others weren't even sure that this was the official video as it didn't look "done" to them. Still others were quick to note a noticeable change in Reznor's physical appearance.

Initially, there were plans to create an animated video using the same company that created Eminem's "Mosh" video. The plans were scrapped sometime during pre-production, after a synopsis of the plot and a casting sheet were leaked to the internet, and because the end result was poorly received by Reznor and Sheridan.

Live
"The Hand That Feeds" has been played live regularly since the Live: With Teeth tour launched in March of 2005.

Lyrics
You're keeping in step
In the line
Got your chin held high and you feel just fine
Because you do
What you're told
But inside your heart it is black and it's hollow
And it's cold

Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Will you chew until it bleeds?
Can you get up off your knees?
Are you brave enough to see
Do you want to change it?

What if this whole crusade's
A charade
And behind it all there's a price to be paid
For the blood
On which we dine
Justified in the name of the holy and the divine

Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Will you chew until it bleeds?
Can you get up off your knees?
Are you brave enough to see?
Do you want to change it?

So naïve
To keep holding on to what I want to believe
And I can see
But I keep
Holding on and on and on and on

Will you bite the hand that feeds you or will you stay down on your knees?
